Life Insurance - Exam Day Tips

Things to AVOID the below the day before your life insurance exam, so you qualify for a lower rate:
  • Stress of any kind. It can cause artificially high blood pressure and pulse readings.
  • Alcoholic beverages of any kind. They also can cause artificially high blood pressure and pulse readings.
  • All tobacco.
  • All forms of caffeine beverages including cola. (Same reason. Tobacco and caffeine, like alcohol, can cause artificially high blood pressure and pulse readings.)
  • All foods high in salt content. Read the labels on any frozen or packaged food before you eat them.
  • Eating eggs and all other high cholesterol foods at least a day, or even two days, before your exam.
Things you CAN DO to get a better life insurance classification:
  • Follow all the fasting requirements you were told about when you made your medical appointment.
  • Get a full night's sleep the night before your exam.
  • Drink a large glass of water one hour before your exam so your urine specimen can be easily obtained.
  • Schedule your exam in the morning when you are slightly taller and your cholesteral is lower.
  • Make a list of all the current medications or herbal remedies you're taking, including, dosage, frequency, and prescribing physicians info.
If something should turn up in your medical exam expected or not, you have the right to dispute the finding. In some cases, volunteering for further medical tests or treatments could result in a drastically reduced premium.

Things you CAN DO well before your exam to get a better life insurance classification:
  • Keep a clean driving record, since life insurance companies use it as a determination of your character.
  • Stay within the insurers normal ranges of height and weight.
  • Diet and excersise for low blood pressure and low cholesterol
  • Life insurance companies give their lowest rates to non-smokers (people who haven't used tobacco of any kind for at least four years).
  • If you do you smoke, cut down right away to be considered a "preferred smoker." Cigar smokers, tobacco chewers, and occasional smokers will pay less than regular cigarette smokers.
  • Keep clean credit. It's viewed as an indication of character.
